Top 4 Local Golf Clubs

A lot of people come to the area to play golf. It is a very relaxing way to spend the day whilst also getting fresh air and with some of the local golf courses right on the sea shore you certainly can get a lot of it.

We are very lucky here at Preston Hall as we are only a 30-minute drive from some of the best golf courses in Scotland. These include Muirfield, Luffness New, North Berwick West, Gullane, The Renaissance, and Archerfield. Scotland’s Golf Coast spans from Edinburgh to the Scottish border and has 22 golf courses so you are spoilt or choice.

 

MUIRFIELD

Muirfield Golf Club, located in East Lothian, is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world. Established in1744 by the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, Muirfield has a rich history and many traditions, hosting major championships, including The Open Championship. This club is renowned for its challenging links course and immaculate maintenance. Muirfield is known for its unique layout, which reverses the direction of play every few holes, the opening nine holes circle clockwise around the perimeter of the property, whereas the back nine run anti-clockwise on an inner circuit, offering a distinctive and demanding golfing experience.

NORTH BERWICK WEST

Established in 1832, North Berwick West Golf Club is known for its beautiful panoramic coastal views of Craigleith, the Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth. This club has unique and quirky scenery all around, making every round a visual delight. North Berwick West Golf Club features a famous Redan hole, this is the most copied hole in the world and is known for how difficult it may be. This club is a cherished destination for golf enthusiasts seeking both a historical and picturesque setting.

GULLANE GOLF CLUB

Golf has been played over the links at Gullane Golf Club for more than 350 years. This club is one of Scotland’s most prestigious member clubs, mixing the finest tradition with some of the most admired natural links in the world. Renowned for its three exceptional links courses, Gullane offers challenging meticulously maintained fairways and greens with breathtaking views of the Firth of Forth. The No.1 course is celebrated for its strategic design and has hosted numerous prestigious tournaments, including the Scottish Open. With a blend of history, stunning landscapes, and top-tier golfing experience, Gullane Golf Club is a must-visit for golf enthusiasts who are visiting, as it truly has a spectacular environment and atmosphere.

THE RENAISSANCE

The Renaissance Club, located in East Lothian, is a modern golf destination that has quickly established itself among the elite courses in the region since its opening in 2008. This course was designed by the renowned architect Tom Doak, offering a blend of challenging play and beautiful scenery. Featuring meticulously crafted holes that integrate seamlessly with the natural landscape and contemporary design, this club provides a premier golfing experience. This year the Scottish Open is held at The Renaissance Club from the 11th – 14th of July. This prestigious tournament provides players with one of the last opportunities to qualify for The Open Championship. The Scottish Open is a key event in the golfing calendar, typically held in July as part of the Rolex Series, which includes several of the European Tour's most prestigious tournaments. It attracts a strong field of international players, partly due to its scheduling the week before The Open Championship, offering golfers a final competitive opportunity to prepare for the major. 

If you are interested in visiting any of these beautiful clubs during Scotland’s peak golf season, we have a charming Garden Bothy House which still has some availability over the summer. The Bothy is a detached house that sits in a pretty garden here at Preston Hall. This ‘chocolate box’ style cottage sleeps six and is pet friendly! The perfect spot for evening drinks in the garden and has private access to our amazing Walled Garden which is 1 minute walk.  The Garden Bothy is only a 40-minute drive from some of these famous Golf Clubs and provides the perfect setting for you as you get to experience these greens first hand.
